Born in Taiwan, currently based in Boston, Yu-Tung Cheng holds degrees in Composition and Music Theory from Brandeis University (PhD), Boston University (MM), and Taipei University of Arts (BA), where she studied with Eric Chasalow, Yu-Hui Chang, and David Rakowski, Joshua Fineberg, Ming-Hsiu Yen, and Tsung-Hsien Yang. She also holds an MA in Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies from Brandeis University. Her research interests include sound and voice in video games, from voice chat and toxic communication to the sonic representation of gender and race. Her works draw on multimodal ethnography and interdisciplinary approaches to media studies.
She is interested in creating music and sound that challenge the audience’s auditory senses, bringing discomfort to their experience as social commentary. She enjoys truck-driver modulations more than anything and believes cinnamon is a culinary crime.
